Thoroughbred Stallion Stormello Dies


Sadly, on April 26 Grade I winner Stormello had to be euthanized due to colic complications. He was put down at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Kentucky. Stormello was just 7 years old.

A Kentucky-bred horse, Stormello was bred by Bill Currin and Al Eisman. His sire was Stormy Atlantic; he was the first foal from Wilshewed by Carson City by Mr. Prospector.


At the time of his death, Stormello had been standing at stud at Tom Simon’s Vinery near Lexington, Kentucky.


Stormello, a speed horse, retired after 11 races. He was a leading 2-year-old of 2006 and was on the 2007 Triple Crown trail. At 2: 1st in the Hollywood Futurity, 1st in the Norfolk Breeders’ Cup and 3rd in the Del Mar Futurity, and 1st in Best Pal S. At 3: 2nd in the Fountain of Youth (by a nose), and 3rd in the Woody Stephens. He was a contender in the Kentucky Derby without placing. In total Stormello raced 11 times with earnings of $700,100.


Currin said of Stormello, “He was gorgeous, His enormous heart for racing thrilled us.” Currin added that they now can only look forward to seeing his babies on the racetrack.


Stormello began his career at stud in 2008. His get include 36 juveniles and 25 yearlings. To date, one 2-year-old starter from his first crop of foals is as yet unplaced.
